Cosmopolitan
A Cosmopolitan cocktail, or the cosmo, is a cocktail made with vodka, triple sec, (orange liqueuer) cranberry juice, and freshly squeezed lime juice. The ‘cosmo’ is a visually good-looking, sophisticated, girl-about-town cocktail. Cheryl Cook’s original 1986 recipe called for “Absolut Citron, a splash of Triple Sec, a drop of Roses lime, and just enough cranberry to make it oh so pretty in pink.” Yet it was in 1987, in Manhattan, the now iconic version of the cocktail was created by Toby Cecchini, he based it on a poorly described version to him of Cheryl Cook’s creation, using lime juice and not citron flavoured vodka.
Cosmopolitan Cocktail Recipe
One measure is always equal to 25ml or 1 fld oz. A cocktail ‘jigger’ pours out one measure easily.
Ingredients: Makes 1 Drink
- 1 measure vodka
- 1/2 measure triple sec (or cointreau)
- 1/2 measure cranberry juice
- 1/2 measure lime juice
- twist lime rind
Directions: Add all the ingredients to cocktail shaker, half filled with cracked ice, shake, then strain into a chilled martini glass with a piece of lime rind. Optional Garnish: Cut an inch wide, 2 inch long strip of orange peel. Hold the orange peel in your thumb and forefinger (over the drink) and hold cigarette lighter in front, just touching, light it for about 3 seconds, then squeeze the peel hard, releasing all the oils which light and set fire. Then wipe around rim of glass and drop in, skin side up.
